If you read last week’s article, then hopefully you’re aware of how excited I was about this month’s purchases. The weed store claimed the Tier 2 strains were of a higher quality and I think they were right. The Northern Lights was a solid strain.
The nugs were beautiful. They smelled delicious, and the strain tasted equally amazing. However, I have to say, this week’s strain, Mochi, was my favorite out of the two.
As a simple, side-by-side comparison, I think the quality of these two strains were the same and were higher than the traditional Tier 2. Everything about these strains rating wise was neck and neck – except for the flavor. While the Northern Lights did have a strong sweet and earthy flavor taste, the Mochi flavor was the best I’ve had in a long time.
Mochi Hybrid Strain Overview
THC: 23% | Effects: relaxation, hunger, and sleepiness |
Strain: Hybrid | Good for: anxiety, stress, insomnia |
Terpenes: Caryophyllene, limonene, and myrcene |
The Mochi buds were sweet and fruity, with a hint of cream, especially on the exhale. Much like the Northern Lights, I had no complaints about this strain. The nugs broke up easily. I thought the high was smooth and strong. The strain didn’t give me itchy throat, and I thought the amount lasted as long as it should. Although I did struggle not to smoke it so quickly because it tasted that good!

I also thought the buds were beautiful. They were dark, dense nugs with highlights of red and purple. The effects of the strain were powerful enough for me to feel good, but not stop me from going about my day.
Mochi Is a Mint Girl Scout Cookies and Sunset Sherbet Crossbreed
This is an intense strain, coming in at about 23% THC according to Leafly. The overall effects make sense, it’s a hybrid strain. Mochi is a crossbreed, created by combining:
- Mint Girl Scout Cookies (hybrid)
- Sunset Sherbet strains (indica-dominant hybrid)
Another quality that has stuck out to me lately are the terpenes. For the last month or so, I’ve heard so much about terpenes and their importance in the cannabis industry that I feel the need to start including the research in these articles.
Interestingly enough, the Mochi strain has the same terpenes as the Northern Lights which were caryophyllene, limonene, and myrcene.
Myrcene has an earthy flavor and is known for reducing inflammation and chronic pain, as well as producing indica-like effects. The Limonene terpene is known for its citrusy flavor, which I thought was pretty evident in the Mochi and can also have antioxidants, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties.
The Caryophyllene has a spicy or peppery flavor and can also have anti-inflammatory properties. All these properties together make this strain ideal for treating stress, anxiety, and insomnia. It also produces feelings of relaxation, hunger, and sleepiness.
Mochi Personal Rating

While the Mochi strain was on par with the Northern Lights, these buds did outrank in a few categories, especially in the Flavor, Aroma and Appearance departments. For those three categories, along with the High Strength all scored a solid 9 out of 10. These buds were absolutely gorgeous. The reds and purples stood out, especially compared to the Northern Lights.
The Burn was tied with the Northern Lights, coming in at an 8.5. The Burn was smooth with few issues. The Quality scored an 8 out of 10. There were a few more stems than I would’ve anticipated, but I didn’t really find this to be a big issue in the long run. Overall, this brings the Mochi strain to half a point higher than the Northern Lights, scoring a 9 out of 10. That also makes this strain one of my top three choices if we were basing the ranking off of the ratings alone.
Final Conclusion
Hopefully, you know exactly where am I going with this. I absolutely loved this Mochi strain, and I enjoyed this more than the Northern Lights so of course I would recommend it. The strain tasted delicious. The high was strong, and the nugs lasted me just as long as I would’ve expected.
